Is Laughter Really the Best Medicine?

What does laughter do to us?

Laughter lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthens the immune system, reduces physical tension and relieves emotional stress.

Hearing or seeing someone laugh is more contagious then a flu or coldĀ because it isĀ instantaneous.

The average child laughs more than 200 times per day, while theĀ average adult laughs about 10 timesĀ per day. according toĀ Certified laugh specialistĀ MiĀcheleĀ B.Ā Granberg.

How is it that laughter is the best medicine?

  • Laughter is free! There is no cost for those who enjoy a good joke.
  • Laughter appears to burn calories, too. Maciej Buchowski, a researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study in which he measured the amount of calories expended in laughing. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories. Ā While the results are intriguing, don’t be too hasty in ditching that treadmill. One piece of chocolate has about 50 calories; at the rate of 50 calories per hour, losing one pound would require about 12 hours of concentrated laughter!
  • Laughter relaxes your the whole body. Ā A big laugh relieves physical tension and stress;Ā your muscles will be relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
  • LaughterĀ strengthensĀ the immune system as it decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells.
  • Laughter of course makes you happy as it triggers the release of endorphins, the bodyā€™s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
  • Laughter helps create a healthy heart. It increases blood flow, which can help protect you fromĀ cardiovascular problems
  • Laughter can make aches and pains seem less severe. Our focus changes as we laugh.
  • Laughing alkalizes the body. Stress creates toxicity in our digestive system and tissues which the body must clean with alkaline minerals. Less stress means more alkaline minerals left over and more alkaline health benefits.
