Do We Still Need Food?

spoon of pills and question

Eating food is a complete waste of time, money and effort according to some people.

Consumers are opting for drinking something all day or popping lots of pills. Why?

Because it is fast, fast food! Faster than eating real food.

They do not want to waste time eating an apple, an orange, a salad or a sandwich. It’s simply quicker to add some water to a powder mixture and drink it down or pop a pill. Time is saved: No shopping for food, food prep or washing dishes.

“I don’t think we need fruits and veggies,” says Rob Rhinehart, a 24-year-old Atlanta software engineer. He switched from food – to shakes – supposedly containing all the nutrients and micronutrients your body needs.

He was so happy with his experience that he formed a company offering these products to the public and has convinced investors to back him with millions in financing. You can bet that they will be using those millions to convince you that YOU don’t need to eat real food, either.

It has been a long time fantasy to dispose of real food for the simplicity of powders and pills.

  • In 1893, at the World’s Fair, Mary Elizabeth Lease predicted that humans would use synthetic food by 1993, thus freeing women from kitchen duties.
  • In 1930, the science fiction musical Just Imagine, told the story of a man who woke up from a fifty year coma in 1980s New York, and found that food had been replaced with pills.

7 Reasons Why I do not Substitute Food for Pills or Powders or Drinks

1. Pills Lacking in Nutrients:
Simply swallowing a pill or consuming a drink made from powders does not provide us with the abundance of nutrients (or fiber!) that real food does.

“Vitamins should be used only as supplements to the diet, not substitutes for healthy food,” says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., antioxidant researcher, Tufts University, Boston. There are 8,000 phytochemicals present in whole foods. Pills or powders cannot mimic this balance found in the combination of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables.

2. Powders Not Fully Digestible and Could be Harmful
When antioxidant nutrients were taken alone in clinical trials, they did not provide the full health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin and mineral supplements, especially supplemental iron, may even be associated with an increased risk for death, according to a study on women aged 55 to 69 years. – Iowa Women’s Health Study, October, 2011

Are you going to let someone else decide what your body needs?

3. Does a Scientist in a Lab Know What Your Body Needs?
Each of our bodies has unique needs. A scientist in a lab cannot know what each body needs. Your body’s requirements change over time and in different environments.  When you take this into account, and try to prescribe isolated vitamins and minerals, it becomes too complicated and maybe dangerous!

4. The Body was Created to Eat Real Food!
Bodies naturally evolved to eat real food. Isolates found in artificial supplements are poorly absorbed, are not recognized by the body as food, and may even be received as toxins that need to be eliminated. There are even higher quality supplements offering superior absorption because they are made of real whole food.

It’s important to chew food to give your jaw and the bones holding your teeth a workout, helping to keep them strong.

5. Real Food is Full of Life!
Fresh fruit or salads are filled with enzymes, delicate complicated molecules that maintain the body using the building materials of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and cannot be processed.

Live food is also beautiful and energetic! You must have noticed how fresh food is more attractive than leftovers.

6. Real Food Tastes Great and Feels Great!
I love eating food and enjoy the fun adventure at the farmer’s market or store. It is NOT a bother.

7. Eating food together and preparing it is a BIG part of every healthy culture.
The joyful French culture for example, is known for their long lunches and dinners together. Creating delicious healthy meals in my kitchen is fun.

What are these people going to DO with all this extra time they save by not eating? Work longer hours at the office? Play more video games?

Let us be together
Let us eat together

Let us be vital together
Let us be radiating truth
Radiating the light of life

(from the Upanishads – one of the oldest songs ever recorded)
